Erectile Dysfunction

Rate Your Sexual Health

Jessica Winebin from Kentucky writes with this snippet from Viagra "Is erectile dysfunction (ED) keeping you from a satisfying sex life? Take this short quiz. The results will tell you if you have signs of ED. How do you rate your confidence that you could get and keep an erection? "

What is Erectile Dysfunction

Monday Johnsen from Los Angeles wrote in with this snip "Erectile dysfunction, or ED, can be a total inability to achieve erection, an inconsistent ability to do so, or a tendency to sustain only brief erections. These variations make defining ED and estimating its incidence difficult. Estimates range from 15 million to 30 million, depending on the definition used. According to the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS), for every 1,000 men in the United States, 7.7 physician office visits were made for ED in 1985. By 1999, that rate had nearly tripled to 22.3. The increase happened gradually, presumably as treatments such as vacuum devices and injectable drugs became more widely available and discussing erectile function became accepted. "

What Causes ED Erectile Dysfunction "Arteriosclerosis, the hardening and narrowing of the arteries, causes a reduction in blood flow throughout the body and can lead to impotence. It is associated with age and accounts for 50% to 60% of impotence in men over 60."

Levels of Erectile Dysfunction "Several recent studies have looked at the prevalence of erectile dysfunction. The Massachusetts male aging study was a cross-sectional random sample community-based survey of 1,290. Erectile dysfunction was self-reported and the condition was classified as mild, moderate or complete. The combined prevalence of minimal, moderate and complete erectile dysfunction was 52%."

How do Viagra, Levitra and Cialis Work Mark Gleesen from Texas writes with this snip "Viagra, Levitra and Cialis prevent the breakdown of nitric oxide, a chemical messenger that promotes relaxation and opening of the blood vessels that supply erectile tissue in the penis. Under the influence of nitric oxide, these vessels expand and stay dilated. Increased blood flow makes erectile tissue swell and compress the veins that carry blood out of the penis, resulting in a full erection."

Diet and Exercise Treat ED "Katherine Esposito, of the Center for Obesity Management in Naples, Italy, and colleagues conducted a study to determine if lifestyle changes designed to obtain a sustained and long-term reduction in body weight and an increase in physical activity would improve erectile function in obese men."

Coping with infertility "15% of heterosexual couples attempting their first pregnancy are unable to conceive. Most authorities will say that there is a fertility “issue." Something that requires some kind of intervention, if a couple has not become pregnant after one year of unprotected vaginal intercourse. It is important in the evaluation of infertility to consider the couple as a unit, rather than placing the “blame” on one partner. Infertility can come as a result of factors inside the female body, inside the male body, or inside both."

Sexually Transmitted Diseases "Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that you can get from having sex with someone who has the infection. The causes of STDs are bacteria, parasites and viruses. There are more than 20 types of STDs. Most STDs affect both men and women, but in many cases the health problems they cause can be more severe for women. If a pregnant woman has an STD, it can cause serious health problems for the baby."
